Currently typing and snacking on the kohlrabi from 2 weeks ago. I was planning on roasting or frying them but after sneaking a slice, I decided the crunchy sweet raw slices would make a great snack.
I’ve had a lot of indoor time this last week, so I gave my fridge a cleaning out. If I don’t stay on top of it, I end up stockpiling vegetables. Such is CSA life. Now there’s plenty of pre-portioned lettuce soup in my freezer, ready to heat and eat. A lot of leafy greens were chopped and tossed in the water at the end of pasta cooking time, to make veggie-heavy pastas. Sometimes I cook the pasta vegetables separately but I was feeling lazy/efficient.
Herbs got the chimichurri treatment, basically blitzed into an herby spread with red wine vinegar and olive oil. This is the recipe I use as my inspiration, with substitutions depending on what’s in the CSA box: https://cafedelites.com/authentic-chimichurri-uruguay-argentina/
Everything was reorganized, the hardier looking vegetables moved to the back, things that need attention brought front and center. Anything that looked more wilty that I felt like eating went in the stock bag. Waste naught want naught.
Predicted contents for next week:
- Broccoli
- English Peas
- Fennel
- Green Cabbage
- Radicchio
- Red Romaine Lettuce
- White Cauliflower
- Purplette Onions
If the English Peas are as good as I’ve gotten them previously, I’ll shell them into a bowl and then eat the tiny tasty green orbs raw and lightly dressed with a pinch of salt. The fibrous shells will go into the stock bag. I keep saying I’ll do a cabbage roast but with the summer heat sinking in, I may make a large batch of sauerkraut instead. Grilling outside is such a summer thing. Fennel bulb, watermelon slices, and even lettuce and radicchio heads, can be transformed over open flame.
Speaking of grilling, July 4 is still a pick up day. Make arrangements now if you’re not available to pick up your shares on Tuesday, July 4:
